When Bucharest pops in the minds of the Westerns, maybe cultural events are not on the main attractions list. Yet, as the new generation is rapidly enhancing their tastes in various creative fields the need for THE cultural event that bring together masterminds along with their masterpieces from different industries is highly awaited by the enthusiasts. If “Dare to be Different“is one of your favorite mottos and you are yearning for innovation, then clear your agenda – you’re going to get busy reaching events, exhibitions, launches and conferences. Hope you got your casual running shoes ready!
Romania’s current design scene is vibrant and fresh, and continues to be a reference point for Eastern European creativity. Therefore welcome to the fourth edition of Romanian Design Week – the largest event dedicated to the creative industries in Romania and the most relevant multidisciplinary event in the local cultural context. It manages to bring together and promote the most recent and relevant works belonging to various creative fields, architecture, graphic design, fashion design, product design, furniture, lighting & decor, and it also includes hybrid and multidisciplinary projects which meet at the crossing of many interests, methods and practices.
Romanian Design Week is a project initiated by The Institute, organized in partnership with ING Bank and it takes place from the 20th of May until the 5th of June. The Main Exhibition is hosted by Piata Amzei and it will display more than 200 works, all of them created within the last year by over 150 Romanian designers and architects. The event provides a platform and a context, and with that a growing network of designers are becoming more confident in their desire to collaborate.
We were there at the launch and we had a blast seeing and feeling the vibe of the main exhibition venue. Beautiful people from various activity fields along with exhibitioners were all absorbed by the “Made in Romania” label that is significantly gaining ground nowadays. From exclusive fashion brands inspired by the country’s folklore and tradition, to award-winning product design and hand-made jewelry, contemporary Romanian designers are showcasing talent and an eagerness to innovate and experiment. The Main Exhibition presents the best Romanian design projects in the last year, signed by 150 designers and architects covering different design disciplines: Architecture, Urbanism and Interior Design, Craft Design, Hybrid Design, Graphic Design and Illustration, Fashion and Product Design.
The main venue – Piata Amzei – takes you into another cultural dimension as the venue itself has suffered a dramatic renaissance and is now looking better than never. Stepping in the main exhibition hall is probably similar with what Alice felt while realizing she is in Wonderland. Nothing was what it seemed and impossible existed only if you believed it does. Reinterpreted furniture with multipurpose use, mind games with a twist, high tech gadgets customized in biodegradable materials like wood, wool or cotton, multisensory experiences that enhance your creativity and relax your mind, mythological and religious artefacts redesigned as modern use objects and so much more. The colors, the shapes, the fabrics, the ideas – oh, you want to be there to believe it! This year, Romanian Design Week will extend its international dimension, meant to emphasize Romanian Design community and to add a new layer to the educational component of the project. So, prepare to be amazed and dazzled by the ideas presented by Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden as they are guest countries at this new edition. And they do have some amazing ideas for local architecture, urbanism, fashion and graphic design and bees as well (yes, bees might even get their own highways in Norway).
Besides the main exhibition, Romanian Design Week includes connected events hosted by design studios, design showrooms, creative hubs, boutique stores, art galleries, all united under the appreciation for great design in 17 days of design activity hosted by 60 locations in Bucharest. (see map here)
Get ready, set and go… because imagination is the only weapon in the war against reality. Take your dose of creativity, indulge yourself with the latest designs and transcend the feeling of what is in order to see what could be. The Romanian Design Week is waiting for you!
